OpenStudy (southernbell82):

What is the number of full rotations a tire will complete in 10,000 miles if the tire is 24 inches in diameter??

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

Is there a formula to find out this??

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

first convert miles to inches

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

1 mile = 63360 inches

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

Could you help me do one first? If the diameter is 24 inches?? I have 3 to do. Just need to see how the first one is done.

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

again, convert miles to inches

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

10,000 miles = ______ inches fill in the blank

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

This is what my calc says. I know this is wrong 6.336e+8

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

that's correct

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

now we calculate the circumference

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

circumference = pi * diameter = ?

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

75.4?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

good now we divide 6.336e+8/75.4

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

11.9?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

nope

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

0.084?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

(6.336 * 10^8)/75.4 = ?

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

Oh Okay One sec...

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

I don't know. I'm getting a huge number! :(

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

tell me what it is

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

8403183.02387

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

good, now we round down to 8,403,183

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

I'm going to fail Geometry this project is due tomorrow! :(

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

it's supposed to be a big number. this is the number of times the wheel will turn when we drive 10,000 miles which is a lot

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

Oh Okay ! So this is the answer??

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

yes

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

Wow Thanks a Bunch!! I have another question??

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

sure

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

What would happen to the number of rotations if the circumference of the tire was increased by 20%?

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

I have more but I know you may be busy.

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

you do what we did before except the circumference this time is 1.2 * 75.4

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

This project is due tomorrow.

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

so we divide (6.366 * 10^8)/ (75.4 * 1.2)

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

the number of rotations decreases

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

And if it decreases by 20%?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

not by 20%

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

No that's the other question if the circumference decreased by 20%?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

i understand what you meant if the circumference decreases by 20% the number of rotations decreases, but NOT by 20%.

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

it decreases by some other percentage

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

Okay thank you so much!!

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

I have another question @Vocaloid???

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

sure

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

It is asking me to estimate how much I drive in a week for the car with 24 in diameter tire. Calculate daily rotations?? If I say I drive 150 miles per week how would I calculate that?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

same thing as we did before.

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

convert miles to inches

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

then divide by circumference

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

see our earlier work if you need help

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

Where does the 150 come in at??

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

If I say that's what I drive per week.

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

repeat what we did the first time

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

instead of 10,000 miles use 150 miles...

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

Would it be 1,260,477

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

almost

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

126047

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

Wow!! Can't believe I was that close. Last question ?

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

Predict when you will need to switch the front and back tires?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

hm. did they give you any background information on this?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

i don't know much about cars or tires

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

They say you rotate every 10,000 miles

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

oh ok that's easy then

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

You have been a lifesaver so far!! Thank a bunch!! ;)

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

since you drive 150 per week you just divide 10,000/150 to get the number of weeks

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

Wow!! You are a genius!! :)

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

np im going to sleep but feel free to tag someone if you need additional help

OpenStudy (southernbell82):

Okay Thank you so much again!!! ;)
