How do I find the slant height of a square pyramid?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Let's say that the height of the square pyramid was 12. The base was 6, and we are left to find the slant height.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

If you connect the base, height, and the slant height together, you can picture actually a right triangle. |dw:1465242930349:dw|

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Notice how for the base, I put 3. This right triangle would have the base be half of the total length of the base. |dw:1465242992369:dw|

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Finally use the Pythagorean Theorem, which is \(\large a^2 + b^2 = c^2\), to find the length of the slant height.
