Read this excerpt from “O Captain! My Captain!” by Walt Whitman. What is the rhyme scheme? O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done, The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won, The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring; But O heart! heart! heart! O the bleeding drops of red, Where on the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead. A:ababcced B:ababcdde C:aabbcded D:aabbddee @supercalifragalisticexspeaalli
This is easy Does the last word in the first line rhyme with the last word in the second line?
yes
Oh, mehek gl
How about the third and fourth line?
no
You don't even let me finish
exalting and daring?
exulting*
Exulting and daring don't rhyme, but in terms of this It has to.
what
Heart doesn't rhyme with any other word, so it has its own rhyme scheme
ok
then why is in the poem
Just because it doesn't rhyme doesn't mean it can't be in the poem o.o
I never said that?
My bad
It has its own letter basically
im so lost and i dont understand rhyme scheme
will someone just explain it to me please
just look at the last word from each line
Rhyming scheme is the pattern
line 1: done line 2: won line 3: exulting line 4: daring line 5: heart! line 6: red line 7: lies line 8: dead
Beneath my genuine eyes Hate and smite lies For joy, I not knoweth of Is a mile away
i did but what does all of those aabca things mean
a rhymes with a b rhymes with b
Done and won rhyme so they are aa Nothing else rhymes with that so we move on to b
Eyes and lies are our first rhyme So they're AA
Of is B, it's alone Away is C
The rhyme scheme of my poem is AABC
If you understand my example
line 1: done <= first one is a line 2: won <= rhymes with the first = a line 3: exulting <= does not rhyme with first = b line 4: daring <= rhymes with the b from before = b line 5: heart! line 6: red line 7: lies line 8: dead
