what happens to a salt water fish when you put it in fresh water?
not sure?
have you heard of something called osmoregulation?
normally, salt water fish have lower concentrations of salt on the inside of their bodies than outside, so the fish have to drink lots of water and expel the salt through their urine
these fish are adapted to live in salt water their entire lives, so they don't have good mechanisms for moving salt in rather than out
what do you think will happen?
Fresh water does not have enough salt concentration to satisfy the survival of saltwater fish. Therefore the fish's hypertonic cells will become hypotonic which will not mix well with the body structure of salt water fish, and they will die. Osmosis helps even out the concentration inside and outside the fish's body.
Most will die, except for euryhaline fish. Read more about it below: http://www.livescience.com/32167-can-saltwater-fish-live-in-fresh-water.html
I personally work at a fish store If you looking to do it to kill a parasite then maybe 1-2 minutes but not too long But eventually If left there it will die
You can't just plop it in to acclimate it to salt to fresh dirt you acclimate it to brackkish and then to fresh or vice versa
Even the Euryhaline fish must be acclimated though. Just plopping them in won't work
