OpenStudy (ellerai):
Can someone teach me how to solve this?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):
are you familiar with the slope formula?
OpenStudy (ellerai):
a bit
i also have th same problems in standard form too
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
does this formula look familiar?
OpenStudy (ellerai):
yes

Vocaloid (vocaloid):
(it's just an image don't worry)
OpenStudy (ellerai):
yes! i just did that a few lessons ago
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
ok, so we pick one point to be
(x1,y1)
and another point to be (x2,y2)
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
our first point is
(-4,-1) meaning that x1 = -4 and y1 = -1
OpenStudy (ellerai):
okay

Vocaloid (vocaloid):
and our second point is
(1 and a half,2)
meaning that
x2 = 1.5 and y2 = 2
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
now we plug all those numbers into our slope formula
OpenStudy (ellerai):
alright
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
y2 - y1 = 2 - (-1) = 3
x2 - x1 = 1.5 - (-4) = 5.5
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
3/5.5 is the same as 30/55 which equals 6/11

Vocaloid (vocaloid):
so our slope is 6/11
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
and only one of the answer choices has a slope of 6/11. which one do you think it is?
OpenStudy (ellerai):
well there is one more it got cut off
OpenStudy (ellerai):
y-1 = 6/11 ( x - 4)
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
oh well then we use our point slope equation

Vocaloid (vocaloid):
now we pick x1 = -4 and y1 = -1
OpenStudy (ellerai):
so it would be the first one because its y+1 and not y-1
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
yes very good!!
OpenStudy (ellerai):
how would i do it in standard form though?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):
start with what we got last time
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
y+1 = 6/11 ( x + 4)
multiply both sides by 11
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
11y + 11 = 6(x+4)
and then isolate y
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
**actually don't isolate y
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
just combine like terms

Vocaloid (vocaloid):
any ideas from here?
OpenStudy (ellerai):
no this is honestly not making sense
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
well, let's go back to the beginning
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
we have the equation y+1 = 6/11 ( x + 4) from the earlier problem
Vocaloid (vocaloid):
to get rid of the denominator, we multiply by 11

to get 11y + 11 = 6(x+4)
with me so far?
OpenStudy (ellerai):
yes
