OpenStudy (tabpernick):

http://prntscr.com/bdltgc alright someone help me here please

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

Do you have any thoughts here?

OpenStudy (tabpernick):

I cant really say that i do. I'm really confused.

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

Average rate of change is, basically, the slope between two points. Give me a minute to put a formula in here.

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

\[A(x) = \frac{ f(b)-f(a) }{ b - a }\]

OpenStudy (tabpernick):

so the equation for my problem would be ?

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

One of your points is x=b and f(x) = f(b). Which one do you want to call b? Either one will do...

OpenStudy (tabpernick):

3?

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

OK, and f(3) is what?

OpenStudy (tabpernick):

what do you mean? im sorry!

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

Looking at the graph: the graph shows 'x' on the horizontal axis, so vfor every value of 'x' there is a value of f(x) measured in the up-down direction. when you go to x=3, what is the value in the up-down, or 'y', or 'f(3)' firection?

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

I mean 'direction' OR... use the equation in the picture: What is -(5)^0 +2 ?

OpenStudy (tabpernick):

it's 1 ?

OpenStudy (tabpernick):

correct?

OpenStudy (tabpernick):

@mjdennis

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

Yes. So now do 'a' and f(a)

OpenStudy (tabpernick):

how?

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

Same way we just did'b' and f(b). One of the two x-values was 3. From there you found f(3) = 1. The other x-value is 'a', and you can find f(a) either by plugging in to the formula or reading from the graph. Finding numbers from a graph and matching them correctly to a formula seems like something you should know by the time you get to solving problems like this. Can you describe the problem you are having?

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

We should now get ( 1 - f(a) ) / (3 - a) Do you have a and f(a) yet?

OpenStudy (tabpernick):

what equation do i use to find a? what is the equation?

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

I have to go. There is no 'equation' to find a. You were given a problem to find "average rate of change between x=3 and x=4" I gave you a formula for the answer that needed two x-values, but the formula calls them 'a' and 'b'. You picked b = 3, so isn't a = 4 ??? Now you just need f(4), the same way you found f(3)

OpenStudy (tabpernick):

the solution to ( 1 - f(4) ) / (3 - 4) is 4f-1 ?correct?

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

No. The answer is going to be a number with a sign, not an expression.

OpenStudy (tabpernick):

the average rate of change is 1 correct!?? thats my answer!?
