Which equations show that the set of whole numbers is closed under multiplication? Choose all answers that are correct. A. –1 • –1 = 1 B. 0 • –1 = 0 C. 0 • 2 = 0 D. 2 • 1 = 2

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

I think it is A & B

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

@homeworkhelp can you help?

OpenStudy (homeworkhelp):

Sure, give me a moment.

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

ok

OpenStudy (homeworkhelp):

Real numbers Integers Rationals numbers Decimals Complex numbers Natural numbers Cardinals Ordinals This is a list of what falls under multiplication. I'm not really sure about this question, but this list may help you. At the same time, since this list says real numbers, whole numbers, things like that, I would assume that C and D may be the correct answer. This one i'm not really sure on. Sorry.

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

ok what school do you go to @homeworkhelp

OpenStudy (homeworkhelp):

I'm currently in high school, what about you?

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

I am in 6th grade but am doing 9th grade math

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

thats m=why I need help

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

*why

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

I am going into 7th grade

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

I can help check your answers here, I think. do you guys know which numbers are the "whole numbers"?

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

aren't all of them?

OpenStudy (homeworkhelp):

I already finished math, :) I'm just not good at some parts of it.

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

ok thats ok

OpenStudy (homeworkhelp):

I mean C and D sorry!

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

oh yeah

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

Well, no. :-) Counting numbers are 1, 2, 3, 4, as high as you can go. But not zero, not fractions, not irrational numbers and all those other weird stuff out there. Whole numbers include zero, so 0,1,2,3,4,... Integers include negative numbers, so ..., -1, 0 -1-2-3,...

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

so it is c & d

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

are those the answers?

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

@mjdennis

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

When they say "closed under multiplication", it means that if you multiply one whole number by another, you still get a whole number. Such as 0*3=0, or C or D. A group that is NOT closed under multiplication is negative numbers. -5*-3 = +15 and +15 does not belong in the negative numbers. Whole numbers are NOT closed for division. If you try \[1\div2\] it is not a whole number!

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

so now i am really confused

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

Well, those two match the definitions. I'm not much for saying "here's the answers"

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

om so most likely it is c & d

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

*ok

OpenStudy (cutegirl1000):

I have 3 more questions... can u help me @mjdennis

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

Sorry, I am off OS until tomorrow. Lots of other good folks to help!
