The function is this? \[\Large f(x) = \frac{x^2+4x-7}{x-7}\] or something else?
@jim_thompson5910
what is the largest exponent in the numerator?
1
oh no i meant 2
it's 2
what is the largest exponent in the denominator? hint: \(\Large x-7\) is the same as \(\Large x^1-7\)
1!
good
the largest exponent in the numerator is 2, so the degree of the numerator is 2. the largest exponent in the denominator is 1, so the degree of the denominator is 1.
since degree of numerator > degree of denominator this means we do NOT have a horizontal asymptote. The asymptote will be slanted (aka an oblique asymptote) http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9uxn3U5jEz8/VC-TK4qZudI/AAAAAAAAAGc/zt-dgnMHBfw/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2014-10-03%2Bat%2B11.26.10%2BPM.png
so it would be "none"?
@jim_thompson5910
yes if it has an oblique asymptote, then it cannot have a horizontal asymptote at the same time (or vice versa)
oh thank you! Seriously this helps ALOT thank you so much. Can i tag you in two more please ?
sure
