OpenStudy (pphalke):

The mean score on a set of 15 exams is 74. what is the sum of the 15 exam scores?

OpenStudy (fwizbang):

To find the mean you add up all the exam scores and divide the number of exams. \[ Mean= Sum of scores /number of exams\] So if you know the mean and the number of exams, how do you find the sum of the scores?

OpenStudy (pphalke):

I have no clue

OpenStudy (fwizbang):

We know the mean is 74, and the no of exams is 15, so 74 =(Sum of scores)/15 We want an equation that says Sum of Scores = Answer. What can we do to the right side of the equation that will leave the Sum of Scores by itself?

OpenStudy (pphalke):

hmm...divide

OpenStudy (pphalke):

I mean multiply 74 by 15

OpenStudy (fwizbang):

THe sum is already divided by 15, so to make the 15 go away we should....

OpenStudy (pphalke):

multiply 74 and 15 to get 1,110

OpenStudy (fwizbang):

Perfect!
