OpenStudy (allie2020):

The degree of a polynomial 10x2+2xm y-4y is 3. What is the value of m. A.1 B.2 C.3 D.4

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

It is way hard to understand your non-standard shorthand. When you see \[x ^{2}\] in an equation, you need to type x^2

OpenStudy (allie2020):

10x^2+2x^m y-4y

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

Retype it so we all know what is going on in the second term. If you need to use parenthesis, do so.\[x ^{2n+1}\] should be x^(2n+1)

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

Got it

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

thanks

OpenStudy (allie2020):

Would the answer be 2?

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

Degree of a polynomial is the power of the _highest_ term. 10x^2 is power 2 2x^m y is unknown right now -4y is power one So we have to work with 2x^m y Can you say why you think it is "2" for the answer?

OpenStudy (allie2020):

Dude forget it. I need the answer. Thanks for your help.

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

Probably not as much as you need to learn, and you're almost there, don't waste it. x^m brings power 'm' to the term. y brings 1. m+1=3
