OpenStudy (rairai22):

What type of figurative language is used in this sentence from James Joyce's "The Dead"? His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling. metaphor alliteration hyperbole euphemism

OpenStudy (jadeishere):

A metaphor compares something as being something else without saying "like or as" Example; She's a cat, ready to pounce on the mouse. Alliteration is the repetition of a sound or letter; as if it were a tongue twister. Example; sally sells sea shells down by the sea shore. Hyperbole is an exaggeration, an extreme exaggeration. Example; As I looked up at the the tree, it looks as if it grew to be 1000 ft tall. Euphemism is the use of words to make an unpleasant thing, or circumstance, seem more pleasant. Example; Passed away instead of Died

OpenStudy (berryanonymous):

Notice the repetition of the s's and f's in the sentence - this is what's called alliteration. An easy way to remember that it's repetition is that there are two a's, two l's, and two t's!
