OpenStudy (marcellesitt):

James wants to tile his floor using tiles in the shape of a trapezoid. To make the pattern a little more interesting he has decided to cut the tiles in half along the median. The top base of each tile is 15 inches in length and the bottom base is 21 inches. How long of a cut will John need to make so that he cuts the tiles along the median?

OpenStudy (marcellesitt):

A. 3 inches B. 6 inches C. 18 inches D. 36 inches

OpenStudy (marcellesitt):

Please help

OpenStudy (marcellesitt):

PLEASEEEEE

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The median is the line parallel to the bases and it is at the halfway point http://www.swiftutors.com/admin/photos/median-of-trapezoid.png

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

To find how long the median is, add up the two parallel sides. Then divide by 2. For example, in this link here http://www.immgt.com/new_page_1_files/image029.gif they add up the two sides 10 and 20 to get 30. Then they divided by 2 to get 15

OpenStudy (marcellesitt):

So the answer would be 18 inches? because I would add 15=21=36 then I would divide that by 2 which is 18?...

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

`So the answer would be 18 inches?` `because I would add 15=21=36 then I would divide that by 2 which is 18?...` you have it correct @marcellesitt

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

btw I think you meant to say 15+21 = 36

OpenStudy (marcellesitt):

Thank you so much!!!

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The median of a trapezoid is the segment that connects the midpoints of the non-parallel sides. The length of the median is the average of the length of the bases.

OpenStudy (marcellesitt):

yes, that's what I meant to say... sorry! but thank you for the help!
