OpenStudy (cryleeb):

-40 - -4

MARC (marc_d):

is the question asking u to solve ? @cryleeb

MARC (marc_d):

if it is solving the question,it will be like this.. before we start, remember this\[(-)~\times(-)=(+)\]\[(+)\times(+)=(+)\]\[(-)\times(+)=(-)\]\[(+)\times(-)=(-)\]

OpenStudy (eriyalovesu):

instead of look it at two negatives numbers being subtracted think of it as 40 + 4 whir would lead you to 44 if I am correct and the last thing you need to do is just put the negative sign in front. which would lead the soultion to be -44.......... I hope this helps!

zepdrix (zepdrix):

@Eriyalovesu Ooo that's not quite right Eriya :D but close! It's -40 + 4 So our number becomes 4 less negative (4 in the positive direction), giving us -36. If it was -40 + -4 then yes, you could apply your fancy trick :)

MARC (marc_d):

yep,it is -36 :)(:

OpenStudy (eriyalovesu):

well at least tried I guess @zepdrix

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

-40 - -4 = -(40 - 4) = -(36)

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

$$\large -40 - -4 = -40 - (-4)$$ $$\large a-b = a+(-b)$$ $$\large -40 -(-4) = -40 +4 = -36$$ To subtract -4 add the opposite of -4 which is 4
