HELP PLEASE I FORGOT WHAT TO DO !?

OpenStudy (donnie1999):

OpenStudy (donnie1999):

@phi

OpenStudy (phi):

do you know how to replace x with 0 and y with 1 in an equation ? for example, for equation x-y=1 do you know how to replace x with 0 and y with 1 ?

OpenStudy (donnie1999):

0-1=1 ?

OpenStudy (phi):

exactly now simplify 0-1 on the left side

OpenStudy (phi):

hopefully you don't need a calculator. 0 - 1 is what ?

OpenStudy (donnie1999):

1=1 ?

OpenStudy (phi):

no. 0-1 is -1 we get -1 = 1 which is not true. That means that equation is not the one we want we want to find an equation where (0,1) works. we have to test each of the choices. we just did the first choice, and it is not the answer

OpenStudy (donnie1999):

lol ok so the eqaution would be x-y=1 ? :D

OpenStudy (phi):

no, not x-y=1 because (0,1) does not work. in other words the point (0,1) is not "on the line" if we plotted x-y=1 we get a line, and it does *not* go through (0,1)

OpenStudy (phi):

let's try 2x + 2y = 4 replace with 0 and y with 1

OpenStudy (donnie1999):

I got 0+2=4

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, and 0+2 simplifies to 2 2=4 not our guy! try the next equation x+y= 0

OpenStudy (donnie1999):

0+1=0

OpenStudy (phi):

is the true ?

OpenStudy (donnie1999):

nope

OpenStudy (phi):

so we have one more to try x+2y= 2

OpenStudy (donnie1999):

ans for the last one i got 2=2 so its true

OpenStudy (donnie1999):

and*

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. they say "an equation in the system...." that is a fancy way to say: we have two lines (equations) that meet at the the point (0,1) (a solution is a point that makes both equations true) and they wanted us to find another line that goes through the point (0,1)

OpenStudy (donnie1999):

thanks :D

OpenStudy (phi):

btw, their line is not the only one that would work but it's the only one on their list of choices that works.
