OpenStudy (nataliemagadan1998):

I WILL FAN AND GIVE YOU A MEDAL!! The equation of line AB is y=1/5x -1. Write an equation of a line perpendicular to line AB in slope intercept form that contains point (1,-2).

OpenStudy (radar):

Remember that a perpendicular line to AB will have a slope "m" that is the negative reciprocal of the line AB. The negative reciprocal of 1/5 x would be -5x. Proceed from their using the required point (1,-2)

OpenStudy (nataliemagadan1998):

@TheSmartOne do you know this

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Yes (:

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

First we need to find the slope of the perpendicular line. If the slope of the line is a/b, then the slope of the perpendicular line is -b/a So what is the slope of the perpendicular line of the slope is 1/5?

OpenStudy (nataliemagadan1998):

-5x?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

just remember the slope is the number without the x :P correct, so now we have so far y = 5x + b now we need to find b which is the y-intercept they gave us a point, plug that in (1, -2) It's in the form (x, y) so plug in x = 1 and y = -2 and solve for b :)

OpenStudy (nataliemagadan1998):

-7= b

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

correct, so the final equation is y = -5x - 7

OpenStudy (nataliemagadan1998):

THANK YOU SO MUCH

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

It was my pleasure! And also, welcome to OpenStudy! :D
