The modern version of Hamlet directed by Almereyda does not deserve recognition since it fails greatly to bring Shakespeare’s play to life. Factors such as language and setting take away from the potential this film had. The world famous “To be or not to be” soliloquy is produced poorly during this film. The Elizabethan era spoke with language that was extremely formal. In the present day, such language is no longer used. Almereyda should have updated the script to modern language.
If he had done this, a lot more people would understand what is being said and Hamlet would not have appeared to be as ridiculous and posh. Along with this negative defect the setting also contributes to Almereyda’s failure. This scene takes place in a local blockbuster, a public place where anybody can walk in. Not only this but it is a very informal location. This soliloquy is meant to demonstrate Hamlet’s despair and the setting disallows the audience to take this seriously.
