Data are collected about the amount of time, in minutes, each member of a dance troupe spend practicing. How does a single outlier change the median of the collected data? (4 points)
A single outlier doubles the value of the median.
A single outlier does not affect the median.
A single outlier causes the value of the median to move slightly toward the outlier.
A single outlier causes the value of the median to move slightly away from the outlier.

OpenStudy (welshfella):
The median is the 'middle' number when the data is arranged in ascending order. if there are an even number of data the median is the mean of the middle 2 numbers.
Adding an outlier will alter the total of numbers and will alter the value of the median.
OpenStudy (acespeedfighter):
im back sorry..
OpenStudy (acespeedfighter):
Hmmmm from what your saying i think its "A"
OpenStudy (welshfella):
the oulier will have a value a lot greater or less than the other values.
OpenStudy (acespeedfighter):

34
OpenStudy (welshfella):
right
Now you want the median of
28 33 34 35 37 100
OpenStudy (acespeedfighter):
34 and 35 what do i do? add the 2 numbers?
OpenStudy (welshfella):
there are now 6 numbers and the median is the mean of the middle 2 numbers.
OpenStudy (welshfella):
you need the mean of 34 and 35

(34 + 35) / 2
OpenStudy (acespeedfighter):
34.2
OpenStudy (welshfella):
69 / 2 = 34.5
OpenStudy (acespeedfighter):
34.5
OpenStudy (welshfella):
ok so 34 moved to 34.5 - is that slightly closer to 100 or slightly away from 100
