An architect planned to construct two similar stone pyramid structures in a park. The figure below shows the front view of the pyramids in her plan, but there is an error in the dimensions: (Image Will Be Posted Below) Which of the following changes should she make to the length of side RQ to correct her error?

OpenStudy (alex_mattucci):

Select one: a. Change the length of side RQ to 9 feet b. Change the length of side RQ to 10.5 feet c. Change the length of side RQ to 8 feet d. Change the length of side RQ to 11.5 feet

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

I can't see the figure.

OpenStudy (alex_mattucci):

You have to click the link

OpenStudy (deaconvex11511):

we did but it says this

The link doesn't work for us, probably because we're not logged in. Can you try to download the picture and then upload it using the "Attach File" button on OpenStudy?

OpenStudy (alex_mattucci):

oh ok then ill get it in a sec

OpenStudy (lilah):

x*3.5=10.5"

OpenStudy (alex_mattucci):

OpenStudy (alex_mattucci):

^^^There it is! ^^^

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

ok, great! Let's do this! :D so, we're constructing two SIMILAR pyramids that means their sides must be in a proportion, similarly the question tells us that the value of RQ is wrong and we need to correct it do you follow so far? :)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You are dealing with similar triangles.

OpenStudy (alex_mattucci):

Yes

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

What do you do to AB to end up with PQ? What do you multiply the length of AB by to get PQ?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

I'll let Math take over as he can do a better job explaining, and also I don't want to confuse you with too many people helping:)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

That is the same as asking what is the scale factor. What is \(\dfrac{PQ}{AB} \) ?

OpenStudy (alex_mattucci):

ok

OpenStudy (alex_mattucci):

1.5

OpenStudy (alex_mattucci):

OH! I got it, It is B. RQ should be 10.5

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Correct. Now let's just confirm. What is PR/AC?

OpenStudy (alex_mattucci):

B is correct, right? ^^^ What I said above your previous post.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Correct. PR/AC is also 1.5 That confirms that the scale factor is 1.5. When you apply a scale factor of 1.5 to 7, you do 1.5 * 7 = 10.5, so the answer is 10.5.

OpenStudy (alex_mattucci):

Alright, Thanks for the help!

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You're welcome.
