OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

Can someone help? I'll fan and medal. Find the measure of angle x. Round your answer to the nearest hundredth.

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

which trignometric function do you need to use to get x? Hint: you were given the opposite side and the adjacent side

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

Tangent, right?

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

@TheSmartOne

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Correct, so now we have tan x = 8/15 Have you learned arctan or \(tan^{-1}\) yet? (both show the same thing) basically, tan of angle equals the this ratio of side but what if you were given the ratio of sides? How would you find the angle? That's where arctan comes in to. so basically tan\(\theta\) = y that means arctan y = \(\theta\)

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

@TheSmartOne no, I haven't learnt that yet, so it looks a bit confusing.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

so tan of an angle is used to find the ratio of sides what if we're just given the ratio of sides? That's where we use arctan to find the angle :)

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

I'm confused

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

mhmm, what don't you understand?

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

would I divide the opposite by the adjacent to find the angle? 15/8?

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

i'm just trying to find x

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

tan of an angle equals to some value arctan of some value equals to the angle flipping adacent and opposite only makes you go from tangent to cotangent cot = 1/tan

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

ok. where do I plug in the length of the sides?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

you need to use a calculator arctan (8/15) = x and then round x to the nearest hundreths, and make sure you're in degree mode

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

is arctan just tan-1?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

yes :)

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

ok i'm doing it now

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

I got .4899573263

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

You're in radians :o change it to degrees :)

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

how would I do that?

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

i'm on a ti-84 plus

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

nevermind, got it :)

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

you press the MODE button and then change it from radians to degrees

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

is 28.07248694 correct?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

yes, now round to the nearest hundreth that would be the 2nd decimal digit

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

28.07

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

that's your final answer :)

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

I have another one, could you check that one and tell me if it's correct? it's the same format.

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

Find the measure of angle y. Round your answer to the nearest hundredth.

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

I got 20.92 for that one

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

@TheSmartOne Pls help me

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

i turned it in and it was wrong so whoops

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Yeah, mhmm, not sure how you got 20 something... http://prntscr.com/c0fyni

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

ugh

OpenStudy (math_genius12345):

thanks for the help on the first one, the second came a little too late tho :(

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

yeah, I went offline for a while, and then I came back and that was when you just submitted it :P
