OpenStudy (suenahelpz):

What is the approximate equation of this line of best fit in slope-intercept form? y =-7/5x + 14 y = -14x + 7/5 y = -5/7x +14 y = -14x + 5/7

OpenStudy (suenahelpz):

I know we can eliminate B and D since 14 is the y-intercept and the y-intercept is b in the equation y = mx + b but my guess would be C

OpenStudy (suenahelpz):

Huh? o-o

OpenStudy (phi):

what is "change in y" divided by "change in x" for example if one point is at (0,14) and the other point is at (10,x) (as near as I can tell) what is the slope? any idea ?

OpenStudy (phi):

*other point is at (10,0)

OpenStudy (suenahelpz):

The slope is (0,14)?

OpenStudy (phi):

for two points (0,14) and (10,0) pick out the "y" values (the 2nd number in each pair) find the difference then do the same for the x values

OpenStudy (suenahelpz):

(10,14)...?

OpenStudy (phi):

for two points (0,14) and (10,0) pick out the "y" values (the 2nd number in each pair) what are the y values ?

OpenStudy (suenahelpz):

14 and 0

OpenStudy (phi):

now do 14-0 = 14 now pick out the x values. what are they ?

OpenStudy (suenahelpz):

The x values are 10 and 0 10-0 = 10

OpenStudy (phi):

ok, but you have to keep the same order (0,14) and (10,0) if you did 14-0 then you have to do 0-10

OpenStudy (suenahelpz):

10?

OpenStudy (phi):

0-10 is -10 the slope is 14/-10 which simplifies to - 7/5

OpenStudy (suenahelpz):

Why would it be negative 7?

OpenStudy (phi):

first, do you see how we get the slope: change in y is 14-0 or 14 change in x is 0-10 or -10 and \[ slope = \frac{14}{-10} = - \frac{14}{10} \] hopefully you know we can do that with the minus sign. to simplify, divide top and bottom by 2 you get \[ slope = -\frac{7}{5} \]

OpenStudy (phi):

in case you did not know, all 3 ways mean the same thing: \[ -\frac{7}{5} = \frac{-7}{5} = \frac{7}{-5} \] though usually we use the first way (with the - sign out front)

OpenStudy (suenahelpz):

Oh okay ;u; Thank you so much! Have a wonderful day.
