First, can you find x and y?
OpenStudy (montsechamorro):
how would i find that
OpenStudy (lord_box):
Well first look at the rectangle above the trapezoid, notice that x has the same length as 8, which means x has to be 8, correct?
OpenStudy (montsechamorro):
yes

Then look at y, you can see that 12 - y = 6 from the rectangle, which means y must also be 6.
OpenStudy (montsechamorro):
So 96?
OpenStudy (lord_box):
The formula for a trapezoid is \[\frac{ b_1+b_2*h }{ 2 }\]
OpenStudy (lord_box):
\[ (b_1+b_2)\]
OpenStudy (montsechamorro):
so the base is 16 right?

OpenStudy (lord_box):
The equation is the average of the bases * the height
OpenStudy (lord_box):
There are two bases. The bases are the two parallel but unequal sides. Base one is 6, and base two is 16.
OpenStudy (montsechamorro):
oh so 6+16
OpenStudy (montsechamorro):
22 x 12
OpenStudy (montsechamorro):
so 132?

My bad. This is what you know. Base 1: 8, Base 2: 16, Height: 6. The formula describes the average of the two bases, not the sum. Then it multiplies by the height.
OpenStudy (montsechamorro):
my answer options are 96,72,48, and 54
OpenStudy (lord_box):
Alright, but you need to be able to calculate the area of a trapezoid.\[\frac{ (b_1 + b_2) h}{ 2 }\]
OpenStudy (montsechamorro):
(8+16) 6
over 2?
OpenStudy (montsechamorro):
oh so 72

That's right.
OpenStudy (montsechamorro):
could you help me with the top part of that.
OpenStudy (montsechamorro):
or i guess its the whole thing
OpenStudy (montsechamorro):
its Find the area of the composite figure.
OpenStudy (lord_box):
The top part is just a rectangle, multiply the base and the height. Then add that to the trapezoid to find the composite area.
