When they use the word "quantity" it means they want you to put brackets around something. quantity four minus fourteen i is (4-14i) in brackets.
So they want us to divide by that whole thing, 7/(4-14i) To get it into `standard form` we'll need to make use of conjugates. Do you know what the conjugate of 4-14i looks like?
do you know the complex number conjugate
do you know what mean the conjugate of a complex number ? - without this you not can simplify it

what..? Can you write it with numbers and not words..?
seven divided by quantity four minus fourteen i 7/4-14 = 7/-10 = -0.7
i am getting my signs mixed up possibly, though
@phi
are you doing \[ \frac{7}{4-14i} \]
yes
multiply top and bottom by 4+14i \[ \frac{7(4+14i)}{16+196} \] (it helps to remember the "fast way" is just square both numbers in the bottom)
i did and i got what i put above
you should get \[ \frac{28}{212} + \frac{98}{212} i \] or \[ \frac{7}{53} + \frac{49}{106}i \] how did you get a minus sign up top ?
i mixed up the signs.....
