OpenStudy (mathsucks321):

Please help

OpenStudy (welshfella):

lol OK if you originally had s stamps and you lost 7 how many stamps have you now got?

OpenStudy (mathsucks321):

??

OpenStudy (welshfella):

suppose you had 40 stamps originally - how many do you have now/

OpenStudy (mathsucks321):

33

OpenStudy (welshfella):

right - you got that by subtracting :- 40 - 7 so if you had s stamps you now have (s - 7) stamps

OpenStudy (mathsucks321):

thats what i was thinking but at first it didnt make sense. But i get it now

OpenStudy (welshfella):

yea s just stands for some whole number I put it in parentheses but you dont have to unless you are doing some arithmetic on it.

OpenStudy (mathsucks321):

ok

OpenStudy (mathsucks321):

How do i solve this problem http://imgur.com/a/44ESD

OpenStudy (welshfella):

I'm coming to that. Now the s - 7 stamps are worth $5.55 and they are each worth $0.15

OpenStudy (welshfella):

Now we need to find an expression ffor the number of stamps Tony has and equate it to s - 7.

OpenStudy (mathsucks321):

ok

OpenStudy (welshfella):

Number of stamps Tony now has = amount they are all worth / amount each stamp is worth = 5.55 / 0.15 Can you work that out? use ur calc.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

Your equation will be s - 7 = the value you find

OpenStudy (welshfella):

then its easy to find the value of s to answer the second part

OpenStudy (welshfella):

what is 5.55 / 0.15

OpenStudy (mathsucks321):

5.55/0.15=37

OpenStudy (welshfella):

great so equation is s - 7 = 37

OpenStudy (welshfella):

Now if you add 7 to each side of the equation youll get the value of s , the number of stamps Tony originally had.

OpenStudy (mathsucks321):

44-7=37

OpenStudy (welshfella):

so s = ?

OpenStudy (mathsucks321):

s=44

OpenStudy (welshfella):

right

OpenStudy (welshfella):

gtg right now

OpenStudy (mathsucks321):

oh...

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

How the hell did he not help you? He worked you all the way through it, right up until the answer!

OpenStudy (mathsucks321):

@agent0smith I'm sorry I got confused! I thought he was making up a problem x.x
