OpenStudy (preston_moore):

denise attends a book sale at her local library each year. the library sells books it no longer wants at a discount to the public. she pays a fixed admission cost of $5, plus a fixed cost for each book she purchases. write a formula that describes ow much densie spends at the book sale. let's let b= cost of each n= number of books she buys t= total cost of attending the book sale

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

She will pay a total cost for the books. That total cost is made up of two parts. The admission to the library which is a fixed amount. By "fixed" it means that it does not depend on how many books she buys. Whether she buys 1 book or 100 books, the admission cost is the same. Then there is an amount she will pay that is based on the cost per book she buys. This cost is not fixed because it depends on the number of books she buys. The more books she buys, the more this part of the cost will be.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Do you follow so far?

OpenStudy (preston_moore):

yea

OpenStudy (preston_moore):

@mathstudent55

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Now we begin to translate the words into an equation. The problem tells us the variables to use. total cost = fixed cost + cost per book Use the variables the problem gives you to simplify the equation above.

OpenStudy (preston_moore):

OK NOW IM LOST....

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

"t= total cost of attending the book sale" "she pays a fixed admission cost of $5" Use these two pieces of information, and the equation with words I wrote above. What do you get?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

This is what I call my equation with words. total cost = fixed cost + cost per book They want you to use t for total cost, so replace "total cost" in my equation with just "t". They tell you the fixed cost is 5, so replace the fixed cost of my equation with 5. Do just that for now. What does my equation become after you make those substitutions?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

From your question: b= cost of each book <------price per book which has units [ $/book ] n= number of books she buys Recall: cost = number of items • price per item t= total cost of attending the book sale <-----includes price of admission t = b•n + 5 The 5 comes from the price of admission
