3000 in scientific notation :- 3000/1000 = 3 so 3000 = 3 * 10^3 (because 1000 = 10^3) I was wondering since the goal is to get the number between 1-10 (meaning we'd have to divide by 1000) could you use a number other than 1000 as long as the number was between 1 and 10 and a power of ten was used? (It doesn't have to just be for the number 3000 I am just speaking in general)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

`you use a number other than 1000 ` if you did that, then the base of 10^3 wouldn't be 10. It would be some other number. The goal is to have the base be 10

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

3000 can only be uniquely written as 3 * 10^3 There is no other way to write it in the form a*10^b where 'a' and 'b' would be different numbers (and not be 3)

OpenStudy (killershark737):

scientific notation can only have numbers greater then 1 or less then or equal to 10.
