Very Quick Question! Will fan and medal!

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

P is a point on the x-axis 13 units from the point (-3,5). Find all the possible coordinates for P. SO the answers are (9,0) and (-15,0) but I got (10,0) and (-16,0)...

@Jadeishere @sammixboo

satellite73 (satellite73):

\[(-3-x)^2+5^2=13^2\]would be one approach

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

@Jadeishere yeah that's what I got but it's not the answer.. @satellite73 hmm okay

satellite73 (satellite73):

you are looking for the distance between \((-3,5)\) and \((x,0)\) to be 13 usually easier to use the square of the distance to avoid the pesky root

satellite73 (satellite73):

using the square of the distance formula, your job is to solve \[(x+3)^2+5^2=13^2\]

satellite73 (satellite73):

you will in fact get the answers you were given

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

@satellite73 gotcha but Im confused how I'm off my one point? the root? what if I just counted sideways by 13 going left and right

satellite73 (satellite73):

no counting here

satellite73 (satellite73):

of you count 13 to the left, you get \[(10,5)\] not \((10,0)\)

satellite73 (satellite73):

or right, or whatever

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

Ill definitely consider the formula but ... why not draw a graph and point and move x left and right 13

satellite73 (satellite73):

yeah and you will not get to the x axis going directly left or right

satellite73 (satellite73):

if you go directly to the left or right, the second coordinate will remain 5

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

maybe I misunderstood the problem

OpenStudy (sshayer):

|dw:1472783158318:dw|

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

hmm @satellite73 @sshayer thanks for the visual!

satellite73 (satellite73):

that is 13 units to the right, but it is not on the x axis @sshayer has drawn a better picture, but you still cannot count the fact that the answer is an integer is just a coincidence (cooked)

OpenStudy (sshayer):

correction it is (-3,5) not (3,5)

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

thanks everyone! @satellite73 @sshayer
