There is evidence that disease wiped out much of the Indian population even before European settlement. Brief contact during exploration and trading was enough to spread some diseases. Likewise, many Europeans could not survive life in the Americas. Some colonies talked of a period of seasoning of 6 months or so. If the new arrivals didn't die before then, they may prove to be healthy enough to live there. This is particularly true the further south you go. This is one of the reason's companies came to prefer African workers over European indentured servants.
