Why did Parliament believe the colonists would accept the Tea Act of 1773? Revenues raised by this act would go toward paying royal governors’ salaries. This act repealed the offensive Townshend Duties that taxed all imports. The revenues raised by this act would go toward the defense of the colonies. The colonial assemblies would collect the revenues raised by this act. This act substantially lowered the price of tea sold in the colonies.

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

The Tea Act came after the Townshend Duties were imposed. Most of those duties had been repealed in 1770. Except the tax on tea. Colonists were by law only allowed to buy tea from Britain. (Even though it was actually grown in India.) So patriots began to encourage people to drink tea smuggled into the colonies by Dutch companies. The British East India company had a monopoly on importing to the colonies but began to lose business and was headed for bankruptcy. Part of it's cost was paying taxes when the tea arrived in London. The Act allowed them to avoid paying that tax and other expenses so that they could sell cheaper in the colonies. So British tea, even with the tax, tasted better and was cheaper even with the tax. Americans rejected it though, because it meant they would allow themselves to be taxed by Parliament. (without representation.)
