Please help!

OpenStudy (jilltalks):

A hardware store mixes paints in a ratio of three parts blue to five parts yellow to make two gallons of lime green. A ration of six parts blue to two parts yellow makes two gallons of ocean blue. A gallon of lime green is $32, and a gallon of ocean blue is $35. Find the cost of 1 quart of blue paint and 1 quart of yellow paint.

OpenStudy (jilltalks):

I think that this will make 3 equations

OpenStudy (jilltalks):

but I don't know how to set up the three equations

OpenStudy (jilltalks):

I forgot how to do ratios

OpenStudy (jilltalks):

????

OpenStudy (welshfella):

let cost of a gallon of blue paint be b dollars and cost of yellow be y dollars the ratio 3 to 5 means that there is for the lime green paint, 3/8 blue and 5/8 yellow and for ocean blue 6/8 blue and 2/8 yellow or 3/4 and 1/4. so we can write the following 2 equations (3/8)b + (5/8) y = 2*32 (3/4)b+ (1/4)y = 2* 35 solve for b and y to get the cost / gallon of the blue and yellow paints.

OpenStudy (jilltalks):

omg thank you this helps so much

OpenStudy (welshfella):

not sure what a US quart is - is it 1/4 of a gallon?

OpenStudy (jilltalks):

yes

OpenStudy (jilltalks):

Should I use substitution or elimination?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

OH OK same as in UK sorry but I have to go.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

multiply the first equation by -2 and add . This will eliminate the terms in b.

OpenStudy (jilltalks):

k thanks
