OpenStudy (shaima):

Which expression represents, twice the difference of two numbers? 2−x−y2−x−y 2(x+y)2(x+y) 2x−y2x−y 2(x−y)

OpenStudy (benji):

Twice the difference between two numbers. So we need to find the difference first, then multiply that number by 2. So 2(x-y)

OpenStudy (shaima):

im still confused

OpenStudy (benji):

Ok well "difference" is what we hear when we subtract two numbers. The difference between 9 and 4 is 9-4 so 5.

OpenStudy (shaima):

ohh

OpenStudy (benji):

So what is the difference between 6 and 8?

OpenStudy (shaima):

2? i think?

OpenStudy (benji):

A better way to describe difference is if you put the two numbers on a number line how many spaces are in between? You were right with 2. And if we say what is the difference bwtween -5 and 10, its not just 10-(-5) we have to think -5 is 5 spaces away from 0 and then 10 spaces to 10 so 15 is the difference.

OpenStudy (shaima):

can u help me with one more?

OpenStudy (benji):

and then saying twice something is just multiplying it by 2

OpenStudy (benji):

sure

OpenStudy (shaima):

On Monday, Jason ran x miles. On Tuesday, he ran 5 fewer miles than on Monday. Which expression represents the total number of miles Jason ran over these two days? −5x-5x x−5x-5 2x−52x-5 2(x−5)

OpenStudy (benji):

Well tha\[2x-5\]t is first day x and then next day x-5 so\[x+x-5\]or

OpenStudy (benji):

messed up a little bit haha 2x-5 should be at the end

OpenStudy (shaima):

Thanks

OpenStudy (benji):

yep
