2. The average distance from the sun to the planet Mercury is about 58,000,000 km. The diameter of a human hair is about 0.0025 cm. A what's 58,000,000 written as a scientific notation? B what's 0.0025 written as a scientific notation? C in comparing the measurements in parts A and B, what else must be done before comparision is made?

OpenStudy (grandmoffchris):

My answers for A and B are 5.8 x 10 with a tiny 7, and 2.5 x 10^-3

OpenStudy (grandmoffchris):

Am I correct?

OpenStudy (benji):

Yes, you are correct. Do you need help with C?

OpenStudy (grandmoffchris):

Aye please

OpenStudy (benji):

Well if you look back at the measurements, what do you notice is different between the two numbers other than the numbers themselves?

OpenStudy (grandmoffchris):

In A it has the little 7 and in B it has ^-3 instead?

OpenStudy (benji):

No, look back at the original measurements so 58,000,000 km and 0.0025 cm

OpenStudy (benji):

The unit of measurement is different, right?

OpenStudy (grandmoffchris):

Right, Km and cm

OpenStudy (benji):

Exactly, so you would have to do a conversion to the same unit of measurement before you could really compare them. \[1 km = 100,000 cm\]

OpenStudy (grandmoffchris):

So I divide?

OpenStudy (benji):

Well I am not sure you actually have to do the conversion or not because either way, the 58,000,000km would just become much bigger in cm, or the 0.0025cm would just become much smaller in km. It's just you have to know to convert if you did have to compare them.

OpenStudy (grandmoffchris):

Si the answer for C is convert the unit of measurement before comparing?

OpenStudy (benji):

Yes I think so.

OpenStudy (grandmoffchris):

So*

OpenStudy (benji):

You can write 1km=100,000cm in your notes just in case you did have to convert you can do in class.

OpenStudy (grandmoffchris):

Ok thanks

OpenStudy (benji):

Yep
