OpenStudy (shaima):

What is the value of 11−3m11−3m , when m = 2?

OpenStudy (phi):

does -3m11 mean \( -3 m^{11}\) ?

OpenStudy (shaima):

no i dont think so

OpenStudy (shaima):

OpenStudy (phi):

details (unfortunately) matter can you make a screen shot of the question?

OpenStudy (shaima):

k

OpenStudy (shaima):

OpenStudy (phi):

oh, it's just 11- 3m which means 11 - 3*m if m was a number, you would use "order of operations" to first do 3 times m then do 11 - answer

OpenStudy (phi):

in other words, find the "m", and erase it. and write 2 in its place do that in 11-3*m can you try ?

OpenStudy (shaima):

its confusing

OpenStudy (phi):

if you were given 3*m and were told to erase m, what would you have left ?

OpenStudy (shaima):

nothing?

OpenStudy (shaima):

ohh 3

OpenStudy (phi):

3* is what I'm thinking now put in 2 where the m was

OpenStudy (shaima):

5

OpenStudy (phi):

no, don't do any arithmetic. we just want to erase the m, and write 2 where the m was in 11 - 3*m

OpenStudy (shaima):

im so confused

OpenStudy (phi):

can you simplify 11 - 3*2 ?

OpenStudy (shaima):

idk..

sammixboo (sammixboo):

He is on the right track @shaima Anyways, when you have a variable (m) and a given number (2), you want to replace the variable with the given number, so if we do that to our expression we will get \(\tt \color{blue}{11-3(2)}\) Now following the order of operations, we need to multiply 3 and 2. What do you get when you multiply \(\tt \color{blue}{3\times 2}\)
