@mathmale
how can 57 3/4 over 5 1/4 have 2 solutions 57.75 divided by 5.25 = 11 and when turning those into fractions 171/4 divided by 5/4 = 171/4 * 4/5 = 684/20 which equals 171/5!
@welshfella
@mazmaz1 This is what i had smarty explain your thoughts i pretty much blame my calculator.
I blame you entry into the calculator because * is the multiply sign. use () to hold fraction and check your maths
oh gosh you never heard of turning division into multiplication! suppose we have 1/2 divided by 1/2 the answer is 1 but we also can turn this into multiplication it would be easier when dealing with more harder fractions 1/2 * 2/1 (flipping the 2nd fraction) which would also equal to 1 but that wasn't the case in your buddy's question and i wonder how you never heard about this! i thought you were schooled well
"57 3/4 over 5 1/4" could be made easier to solve by writing each mixed number as an improper fraction. For example, your 5 1/4 would become 21/4. Convert 57 3/4 into an improper fraction. If you now form the quotient of these 2 improper fractions, you'll note that the common denominator, 4, can be cancelled out.
Skip the commentary on schooling, please. Totally irrelevant to this math discussion.
I know I know just check your maths again and don't put useless stuff into calculator just use decimals its a machine not a human. as for my schooling... say as you wish but you can never be.
21/4 and 171/4
\[\frac{57 + \frac{1}{4} } {5 + \frac{1}{4}}\]
Continuous typo
Check that 171, please.
57 and 3/4 is the same as 171/4 am pretty sure
maz maz you are well schooled let's move on
\[\frac{57 + \frac{3}{4} } {5 + \frac{1}{4}}\]
Your mistake is in basic maths. 171 /4 is NOT 57.75
Ha now it's right
that what is it as a fraction am super confused !
Convert 57 3/4 to an improper fraction. Start over.
do 171 divided by 4 you will not get 57.75 which you should if that really is the fraction form.
i know it won't am asking what is the fraction of 57.75 then! and mathmale shouldn't we suppose the multiply 57 by 3 and leave the denominator?
No, Your initial denominator is 4, not 3. Mult. 57 by 4 and then add 3 to the result. Write the result over 4. THAT is your "improper fractin."
maxmaz1: Kindly give Will some time and space to answer. Kindly.
231/4 interesting! but when i plugged 57 3/4 on my calculator it did appear as 171/4!
Show us how you obtained 171/4. Wouldn't 57 times 4 be 228?
so 231/4 divided by 21/4 which i can set as multiplication 231/4 * 4/21 which equal to 924/84 which is equal to 11 Wow Thank you mathmale and maz and ji
here's how i obtained it @mathmale \[57 \frac{ 3 }{ 4 }\]
As I said Check the Maths. always double check and try to use decimals when using computing devices Your welcome
OK, but I would simplify things by NOT multiplying by 4. You ought to cancel the 4s.
