WILL FAN AND MEDAL! CAN SOMEONE CHECK MY ANSWER?

OpenStudy (rz172):

Is the answer in the circle? (x,y) > (1, -3.5)

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Have you used the 'midpoint formula' to obtain that result?

OpenStudy (danjs):

The midpoint is found from the average of the two endpoints x and y coordinates... endpoints (x1,y1) and (x2, y2) \[\large M(x , y)=(\frac{ x _{1}+x _{2} }{ 2 }, \frac{ y _{1}+y _{2} }{ 2 })\]

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes, that formula is exactly what you need for this job. you are given 2 points. let x1 be 9, x2 be 7, and so on. Show your work. Calculate the x-midpoint and then the y-midpoint separately. What are your two results?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

No need to use private messaging here. Have you found the midpoint of the horizontal line beginning at x=-7 and ending at x=9?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Kindly do NOT private message me when discussing a math problem. Type your comments here. The midpoint, as you have already calculated it, is (1, -7/2).

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Does that answer your question, or is there more to your question?

OpenStudy (rz172):

So for the question mark, it is "1"?

OpenStudy (rz172):

@mathmale

OpenStudy (mathmale):

sorry, I don't understand your question. Explain in more depth what you want to know. Is the answer in the circle? (x,y) > (1, -3.5)

OpenStudy (rz172):

In the picture, It asks the answer what is in the green box with "?" in it. Is it "1"? @mathmale

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes, you write '1' in the green box. That's the x-midpoint.

OpenStudy (rz172):

And this one is ? I don't understand how to do this part. -7/2?? 3? @mathmale

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Show me how you got -7/2. I don't see where your '3' came from. The midpoint formulas involve division by 2, not by 3.

OpenStudy (rz172):

2+(-9) = -7? and if you divide that, that is 3.5?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

-7 is correct. Note that this is negative. what happened to your negative sign? You've responded with 3.5. That's positive.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

So, try again. The y-component of the midpoint is ... what?

OpenStudy (rz172):

-3.5?? I don't know. I'm lost.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

all you are doing is dividing -7 by 2. That's -7/2, or -3.5.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

anything else you need to discuss?

OpenStudy (rz172):

So what is the answer then for the green box? 7?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Rz: You need to take chances, YOU tell ME what you think the answer is. You don't need my approval for every step you take. What is the midpoint of the line connecting the 2 given points?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You have already asked what goes into the green box, and I have already responded. Please go back and review our discussion if you're unsure what goes into the green box.
