OpenStudy (loveneenah):

Does any one know 4*(4+(2 to the 6th power * 2 to the -3 power ))

OpenStudy (loveneenah):

A.48 B.24 C.12 D.2.

OpenStudy (ajspeller):

Use the order of operations. Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication and Division left to right, Addition and Subtraction Left to right. Or input it into a calculator

OpenStudy (loveneenah):

How do u put the powers in the calculator?

OpenStudy (1davey29):

Use the carrot (^) symbol.

OpenStudy (1davey29):

So 2 to the 6th would be 2^6

OpenStudy (loveneenah):

So the answer is 64.

OpenStudy (loveneenah):

For the 2 to the 6th power is 64. what about the 2 to the -3 power?

OpenStudy (loveneenah):

the choices are A.48 B.24 C.12 D.2.

OpenStudy (1davey29):

To plug in a negative exponent, put the exponent in parenthesis after the carrot. To solve it without a calculator, rewrite it from x^-n to 1/x^n, so 2^-3 becomes 1/(2^3)

OpenStudy (loveneenah):

So it is C.12

OpenStudy (1davey29):

No. First, multiply 2^6 by 2^-3.

OpenStudy (1davey29):

Then add 4. Then multiply by 4.

OpenStudy (loveneenah):

I did 2^6*2^-3 and got 8 then added 4 and * by 4 and got 48 so A.

OpenStudy (1davey29):

Yes

OpenStudy (loveneenah):

thank you I will fan and medal you!!

OpenStudy (loveneenah):

There you go!

OpenStudy (loveneenah):

Could you help me with a few more? plz

OpenStudy (1davey29):

Sure.

OpenStudy (loveneenah):

Ok ,what is 140,200,000,000 written in scientific notation

OpenStudy (1davey29):

Scientific notation is just the number with one digit to the left of the decimal and multiplied by 10^n. Example: 342,000,000 in scientific notation is 3.42*10^8. N can be found by seeing how much you move the decimal. First, move the decimal so you have only one digit to the left.

OpenStudy (loveneenah):

Ok so 3.42*10^8= 342000 ( the 0 is going on and on.)

OpenStudy (1davey29):

It would be equal to 342 with 6 zeros. It's to the 8th power because you move the decimal right 8 times. 3.42 -> 342,000,000.

OpenStudy (1davey29):

I'll be back in 30

OpenStudy (loveneenah):

Ok

OpenStudy (1davey29):

I'm back
