(-3,0.8) (-2,-0.8) (-1,1.6) (0, -1.6) (1,0.4) (2,-0.4) (3,0.8) (4, -0.8) A) not a function B)function

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Hey Vince! Here are some points that would make up a function: \(\large\rm (2,4)\quad (3,4)\quad (4,1)\quad(5,0)\) Here are some points that would NOT make up a function: \(\large\rm (2,4)\quad(\color{red}{3},4)\quad(\color{red}{3},1)\quad(5,0)\) See how the x=3 is repeated? The second and third coordinate would be stacked, one above the other. So they fail the vertical line test. We can't map an x-coordinate to more than one y-coordinate.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Are you points giving you any problems like that? Try to compare to the example given.

OpenStudy (vincentblackshadow):

so only if the x repeats its not a function?

OpenStudy (vincentblackshadow):

if the y repeats it doesnt matter?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Correct. Even this would be considered a function: \(\large\rm (3,0)\quad(4,0)\quad(5,0)\quad(6,0)\)

OpenStudy (vincentblackshadow):

okay thank you

zepdrix (zepdrix):
