This is the answer i got to the question but its not right, someone please help. 5x^5+4x+1 Find the volume of a rectangular prism if the length is x, the width is x2, and the height is 5x2 + 4x + 1. Use the formula V = l ⋅ w ⋅ h, where l is length, w is width, and h is height, to find the volume.

You forgot to distribute. For example, x(x+1) wouldn't be x^2+1, you would have to distribute the x to all your terms, so it would equal x^2+x. If you distribute your x and x^2, you'll get the right answer, your 5x^5 is right, but the 4x+1 is what you need to fix.

OpenStudy (jade27p):

How would i do that

OpenStudy (jade27p):

wouldnt it stay the same because its being simplified?

OpenStudy (1davey29):

Doing it with the x would be x(5x^2+4x+1), so you would multiply the x by each term (5x^2, 4x, and 1). This would be 5x^3+4x^2+x. Now just do that with your x^2 as well. You always distribute, even when being simplified. It's a property of multiplication.

OpenStudy (jade27p):

10x^2

OpenStudy (phi):

the idea is if you have (for example) 1 cow + 1 horse and you want 2 times as many: 2*(1 cow + 1horse) you do 2*1 cow + 2*1 horse and get 2 cows+ 2 horses that idea still works for letters x*x^2 * (5x^3+4x+1) first do x*x^2 to get x^3 (you can do that , right ?) now you have x^3 * (5x^3+4x+1) you multiply by each term in the sum

OpenStudy (phi):

can you do this or is it still confusing ?

OpenStudy (jade27p):

5x^6+4x^4+x^3

OpenStudy (phi):

yes! but I made a typoed I should have written x^3 * ( 5x^2 + 4x + 1)

OpenStudy (phi):

so the answer is 5x^5+4x^4+x^3

OpenStudy (jade27p):

thank you

OpenStudy (jade27p):

can you help me with one more

OpenStudy (phi):

did you post it ?

OpenStudy (jade27p):

i will tag you
