OpenStudy (rc3212):

you needed to find a common denominator and 2 times 7 equals 14

OpenStudy (welshfella):

you can only add fractions when the denominators are the same so here you have to find the lowest common denominator of 7 and 2 which is 14.

OpenStudy (starfireandrobin):

Was cross multiplication involved?

OpenStudy (rc3212):

yes when you multiply the bottom you always have to multiply the top too

OpenStudy (welshfella):

so to convert to a fractio with denominator = 14:- 1 * 7 7 - = -- we multiply by2 by 7 to give 14 Note we must 2 * 7 14 multiply the top and bottom by 7.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

in a similar way we multiply 2/7 by 2/2 to get 4/14 so now we can add 7/14 + 4/14 = 11/14
