Kelly makes $10 more per hour than her regular pay when she is working overtime. Yesterday, she worked 8 regular hours and 4 overtime hours and earned $160. What is Kelly's regular pay per hour? $20 per hour $10 per hour $12 per hour $16 per hour

OpenStudy (evansanchez):

is it 20

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Let's let her "Regular pay" = x So when working regular hours...she makes (x * number of regular hours) During overtime hours..she makes 10 dollars more than regular per hour (x+10)...so she makes ((x+10) * number of overtime hours) So here...if she made total 160...and worked 8 regular hours and 4 overtime hours...we have \[\large (x * 8) + ((x+10)*4) = 160\] \[\large 8x + 4x + 40 = 160\] I'll leave this for you to finish up!

Also Evan, to just check your answer...think about it If her regular pay is 20 dollars per hour....and she works 8 regular hours...that's ALREADY 160 so that would mean she made NOTHING in terms of overtime pay...so that can't be correct

ten
