OpenStudy (katylee):

It's -25 in Alaska and 75 in Florida. What is the temperature difference between the 2?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Have you ever lived in a place where the temp. drops below zero degrees Fahrenheit in winter? Why don't you graph a vertical number line: Draw a vertical line. Mark the temperature "zero" on it. Mark 75 degrees on this line, ABOVE "zero." Mark -25 deg. on this line, BELOW "zero." Think: based upon your graph, how many degrees separate -25 from 75 degrees?

OpenStudy (katylee):

25

OpenStudy (mathmale):

But you have to begin at -25, move up to 0, then move up again from 0 to 75. What is the total distance you'd cover? It's more than 25 degrees.

OpenStudy (katylee):

35

OpenStudy (mathmale):

K: Sounds as tho' you're guessing. In the long run that won't help you much. Try plotting the 3 different temperatures on the vertical line that resembles a thermometer.

OpenStudy (katylee):

I do not get negative numbers

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Have you ever experienced a temperature of below 32 degrees F or below 0 degrees C?

OpenStudy (katylee):

no

OpenStudy (mathmale):

OK. I was born in NY State, where temperatures definitely do drop below zero in winter time. Would you please click on the pencil icon in my drawing. This will open a copy of my drawing and enable you to edit my drawing.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Reviewing what I said earlier, graph 0 degrees, then graph 75 degrees (above zero) and finally graph -25 degrees (below zero).

OpenStudy (katylee):

ok
