English 3 Question! What is modernism and how did it develop?

OpenStudy (moldybubblegum11):

Modernism is a philosophical movement that, along with cultural trends and changes, arose from wide-scale and far-reaching transformations in Western society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

I dont know this one sorry

If this is architecture - mainly as a result of technological improvements at the beginning of the 20th century and notable developments such as the Crystal Palace erected for the Great Exhibition in Hyde park, London. it became apparent that buildings could be framed and thus the wall which does nothing but keep the weather ut could be a light and glassy as you wanted it. Owen Williams used this in his Boots factory as did Frank Lloyd Wright for his Johnson Wax building. Witht he writings of Le Corbusier (Towards aNew Architecture) the idea of modern principles were widely published and taken up by a grup of modernists at the Baushaus School in Dessau under Walter Gropius. Semianl buiolding appeared ion the thirties - and iconic buildings like the Penguin Pool at Regent's Park Zoo were highly influential. The International Style of white plastic (cincrete) buildings with wrap aroud windows and idustricalised materials was popular in areas like Frognal in London between the wars - ad schemes like Wells Coates' Lawn Road Flats, Gibberd's Pullman Court and Tecton's Highpoint 1 & 2 were oustanding examples. After WW2 the styke lost some impetus - as flat roof buildings got a bad name and system type buildings were ssen as a universal panacea. The collapse of Ronan Point in Canning Town put people off modernism - and by the 70's it wass all about folksy community architecture. Modernism revived -as Post Modernisn (a ludicrous term) and most building today still use many of the principles espoused by Corbusier and Mies Van Cer Rohe, albeit in a rather more pragmatic way.
