OpenStudy (jadareese_18):

What is the correct first line for dividing the function f(x)=x^3-12x+16 by (x-2) using synthetic division? My answer 2 | 1 0 -12 16 ---------------

OpenStudy (jadareese_18):

Is this correct?

OpenStudy (will.h):

Yeah good work

OpenStudy (will.h):

As an additional move I think you have to bring 1 down the line.

OpenStudy (jadareese_18):

Could you explain to me why I needed to add the 0 in to use synthetic division? I'm having trouble understanding that. @WIll.H

OpenStudy (sshayer):

it is \[0x^2 \]

OpenStudy (sshayer):

\[x^3+0x^2-12x+16\]

OpenStudy (will.h):

Descending order of degrees And if there wasn't a term between X^3 and -12x You have to add it and make the coefficient 0
