@Whitemonsterbunny17 Which sentence uses a verb phrase to indicate the past possibility of answering the email? I may answer the email. I answered the email. I could have answered the email. I am answering the email

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Past possibility... What's your guess?

OpenStudy (wolfgirl3_):

the first one

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

'May' means that there is that possibility, but in this case it is a possibility in the \(\underline{future}\). We need to find one that indicates that it could have happened in the past.

OpenStudy (wolfgirl3_):

the second one then

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Why?

OpenStudy (wolfgirl3_):

i answered means that she answered it which mean it was in the past

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

You're partially correct; it is in the past, yes. However, we have to find one that indicates the \(\underline{possibility}\) of it happening. This one just blatantly states that it happened. I did it (I did something in the past). I could have done it. (I possibly did something in the past).

OpenStudy (wolfgirl3_):

i have no more ideas on what the answer could be could you tell me what u think

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

I can't blatantly tell you the answer, that's not how it works here. I think you can get it... Take a look at this example: \(\bf{I~}\color{lime}{could~have~}\color{turquoise}{went~}\color{black}{to~the~beach.}\) 'Could have' is in green, as it shows the \(\bf\color{lime}{possibility}\) of something happening. 'Went' is in turquoise, as it shows a \(\bf\color{turquoise}{past~tense}\) word which indicates that this occurred (or could have occurred) in the past. With that said, what's your next guess?

OpenStudy (wolfgirl3_):

the third would i believe is right

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Why's that?

OpenStudy (wolfgirl3_):

that answer cause i could have is pass tense and makes it in the pas

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

'could have' indicates the possibility in the past tense, yes. 'answered' is a verb in the past tense which shows that the action occurred in the past.

OpenStudy (wolfgirl3_):

thanks for the help even if it took me awhile to finally get the right answer

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

You are welcome. It is time-consuming, yes. The whole point of this is to help you to really \(\bf\color{lime}{learn}\) and \(\bf\color{magenta}{understand}\) the material. OpenStudy isn't intended to be used as a source to get just answers.
