OpenStudy (itrymath):

Given f(x) and g(x) = f(x) + k, look at the graph below and determine the value of k. (1 point) k = ______

OpenStudy (itrymath):

OpenStudy (taylor0402):

what do you think k is

OpenStudy (itrymath):

I don't know

OpenStudy (itrymath):

Can you be willing to guide me through this?

OpenStudy (taylor0402):

i think its 3 because the points are (0,-2), (3,-1), and (6,0)

OpenStudy (taylor0402):

im only 75% sure this is right though...sorry couldnt help more

OpenStudy (mhchen):

Eh actualy, this is a vertical translation.

OpenStudy (itrymath):

Isn't there any steps not just points?

OpenStudy (mhchen):

You know how to transform a function vertically right?

OpenStudy (itrymath):

No.

OpenStudy (mhchen):

f(x) = x + a <--- increases every point by a times in the y-direction

OpenStudy (itrymath):

my teacher teach me this but i fell asleep thats why im on here

OpenStudy (mhchen):

Okay so let's look at the y-intercept of f(x) It's (0,-2) right?

OpenStudy (itrymath):

yes

OpenStudy (mhchen):

and the y-intercept of g(x) is 3 right?

OpenStudy (itrymath):

yes

OpenStudy (mhchen):

so (0,-2) --> (0,3) Which is a vertical translation of 5 right?

OpenStudy (mhchen):

Basically the whole line moves up by 5

OpenStudy (itrymath):

which line there is 2

OpenStudy (mhchen):

The f(x) moves up by 5 to get to g(x)

OpenStudy (itrymath):

oh okay

OpenStudy (itrymath):

oh okay you stated 0,-2

OpenStudy (mhchen):

Yeah, so g(x) = f(x) + 5 And 5 is the vertical translation We could also do this horizontally if you want :3

OpenStudy (mhchen):

but the question asked for the vertical translation component. If we were to do this horizontally btw, we see how the x-value changes. and it's like g(x) = f(x-a) <-- moves the line 'a' units to the right

OpenStudy (itrymath):

i get it but whats k equal then?

OpenStudy (itrymath):

5?

OpenStudy (itrymath):

or 10

OpenStudy (mhchen):

Yeah 5. We moved the whole line of f(x) UP by 5

OpenStudy (mhchen):

and f(x) + 5 moves it up f(x) + a moves it up by 'a' units.

OpenStudy (itrymath):

you can go help other... im just going to understand this and if i need help ill tag you
