OpenStudy (valirium):

Simplify the expression -5 + i / 2i

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

-3

OpenStudy (valirium):

How did you get that? @Dustin_Whitelock

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

Sorry it was wrong. Extremely sorry.

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

-9/2

OpenStudy (valirium):

How did you get that then?

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

see, i/2i? You are left with 1/2. understand why?

OpenStudy (valirium):

Is it because you can cross out the i's?

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

Yes.

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

Now you're left with -5+1/2. Got it?

OpenStudy (valirium):

And do you add -5+1 and then divide?

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

No, I didn't use the bracket, but it actually is -5+(1/2) which means the same without brackets.

OpenStudy (valirium):

Can you explain it for me? I'm still trying to understand it :c lol

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

which grade are you in?

OpenStudy (valirium):

10th..

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

It must be easy for you. Okay....

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

there's this rule called BODMAS Bracket Of Divide Multiply Add Subtract Use this serially from beginning to know what to use first. Use this rule and in -5+1/2, you do the divide first because of bodmas, I guess you're getting what I'm saying.

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

So you do 1/2 first. You can say it's 0.5, if you simplify it. so -5+0.5 is same as 0.5-5 (remember distributive rule?) so it is -(5-0.5) or -4.5

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

You can also say 5 as 10/2 so -5 is -10/2 so -5+1/2 is -10/2 +1/2 which is (-10+1)/2 which is -9/2 if you divide -9 by 2 you'll get -4.5, the previous answer

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

If you don't know why or how to convert 5 to 10/2, this is for you 5 is 5/1, I hope you know it. multiply both the numerator and denominator by 2, you get 10/2. this 10/2 makes it easier for you to operate it with 1/2 (in case of addition or subtraction) as you only need to operate on the numerator and the denominator is common to both which is 2.

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

if you want to know how or why I converted 1/2 to .5: multiply numerator and denominator by 5, you get 5/10. It's a trick for you, if the numerator is 10 or 100 or 1000 or something like that; put a decimal in front of as many digits from the rhs of the last decimal of the numerator (here decimal notation of 5 is 5.0) as are there zeroes in the 10 or 100 or 1000, etc. If there aren't enough digits, replace the empty places as 0. anyway by this rule 5/10 becomes 0.5. Anyway if this trick is confusing simply divide 1 by 2 or 5 by 10. now operate with -5 and the you get the answer.

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

If you have a doubt ask me now, I'll be leaving the question soon. If you find my explanation satisfactory, please award me a medal. Thank you.... ;D

OpenStudy (valirium):

So the answer is -4.5?

OpenStudy (dustin_whitelock):

Yes.
