Hundreds of amendment proposals are introduced in congress each year. only 33 have ever received enough votes to actually be proposed. Of those, 27 where ratify and are now part of our constitution. The first twelve amendments where proposed only a year after the constitution took effect! only ten of these where ratified by the states. they became the first ten amendments to the constitution, and we call them the Bill of Rights because they define many of the rights guaranteed to U.S. citizens. The 27th Amendment was actually one of those original twelve... but it wasn't ratified until 1992! The 21st Amendment, which repealed the prohibition against alcohol in 1933, was the only Amendment where states held special conventions to ratify the proposal.

Seems like it's talking about the way in which amendments to the Constitution are ratified and added to the Bill of Rights. Do you have a specific question about it?

OpenStudy (helpkay):

yeah like i don't get what the 33 then 27 to 12 to 10 all works out

OpenStudy (sapphiremoon):

So let's go like a timeline: 1) The Constitution comes into effect. 2) 12 amendments are proposed. 3) 10 of them are ratified and become the Bill of Rights. 4)21st amendment had special committies to ratify it (repealed the 18th) 5)27th amendment was part of the 12 in 3), but didn't make the cut 6) 33 amendments proposed in total 7) 27 of the 33 make the cut into today's Bill of Rights Make sense now?
