Basically, the guilds were the people who generated the money, and the bankers were the ones who stored the money either or "safe keeping" (ha ha ha) or for lending (ha ha ha - at interest rates so to make MORE money ha ha ha), and, of course, for SMILING at people whilst they raked in the loot, based on their "risk" compared to the risk of a merchant sponsoring a ship to sail somewhere, rip someone else off for some desirable goodies, and return a hero, and sell it and get rich. Since health and sanitation were a big issue - bubonic plague etc - things like spices, and maybe some disinfectant were popular things on the trade routes. The cheaper the better for the merchants - hence slave labour which was free - biggest risk was the journey, maybe, so get insurance for the journey. the word "bank" comes from the italian word "banco" which mean a "bench" on which traders and merchants would do "insurance bartering" to try to limit the damage if one of the MANY merchant ships sank or didn't make it back to port. "The merchant of Venice" is a play which sort of sort of sort of deals with this, sort of (get the message ?). They used to write down their money transactions on very large bits of paper (spread sheets ?), and then some Italian had the idea of making the papers more ORDERED. This was maybe the start of DOUBLE ENTRY BOOK KEEPING. From then, the money lenders and the money borrowers kept going, as they would 'cos there was MONEY involved, and with ELECTRONIC COMMS and computers, they could replace writing with typing, and sending papers by post with doing the same thing by what's now called email. http://perendis.webs.com

OpenStudy (answerordie):

i don't think that's gonna work

OpenStudy (answerordie):

._.

OpenStudy (answerordie):

you didnt even say if you agreed or disagreed

OpenStudy (osprey):

@answerordie If you referring to my post ... why won't it work ? ...

OpenStudy (answerordie):

;-;

OpenStudy (answerordie):

well in the first paragraph you made merchants and bankers sound pretty evil >.>

OpenStudy (answerordie):

and what does the second paragraph have to do with anything l0l

OpenStudy (osprey):

The money world is pretty ruthless, and pretty rich. You are more than free to edit it or delete it as you like, it's just what I think I've gleaned over watching various money crises throughout the world from US to UK to Europe to Greece, and the use made of diamonds, and other goodies in "third world countries". The word "bank" comes from Italy. The Italians were key developers of a money system. Modern day stuff is the electronic version of what they did. It was buying and selling insurance, and the various goodies. Was it "evil" ? Well, I've not met any former slaves ...
