extreme value!!

OpenStudy (user123):

am i right?

OpenStudy (phi):

on the closed interval [1,2] it seems the endpoints represent a max (at x=1) and a min at x=2

OpenStudy (user123):

what are the round brackets? my teacher said theyre the same thing

OpenStudy (caozeyuan):

open interval means endpoints excluded, is represented by round brackets, closed interval means endpoints included and is square brackets

OpenStudy (phi):

the ( or ) means the given number is not part of the region for example 2) means 2 is not part of the region, but all points (numbers) less than 2 are included. In such a case, there is no maximum. For example, say you claim 1.999 is the max value. Then I say, what about 1.9999 ? (which is bigger than the number you gave). You can play that game forever... there is always a number bigger than any you stipulate (but is also less than 2). This leads, for example, (1,2) not having a min or max
