Define a nonlinear conservative system with example

OpenStudy (osprey):

jango_IN_DTOWN Define a nonlinear conservative system with example **** gravity is inverse square law which is non linear, isn't it ? So is Coulomb's law, isn't it ? http://perendis.webs.com

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

...simple idealised pendulum definition: \(\vec V = - \nabla \phi\) where ...... don't know maths well enough but add summat about \(\phi\) being non-lin my brainwashing leads me to think non-lin is all about DE's ;-(

OpenStudy (jango_in_dtown):

Can you define a non linear conservative system? The examples are fine. :) @osprey @IrishBoy123

OpenStudy (osprey):

I've got to add that I don't really understand the q. I'd never consciously have thought of grav and Coulomb as being "non linear", they're more conservative. Non linear tends to strike terror into what's left of my bird brain maths fear ... I'm thinking expansions in polynomials and Legendre functions etc etc etc ... but that's my problem.

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

@osprey it's all math-ese, mate. no need for it!! a bit like this!! |dw:1477907931326:dw| i'm playing with this thing at the minute and it's just making me giggle. why oh why :-)
