OpenStudy (mahoganie.carson):

Why was India called the "Jewel In The Crown"? India's wealth and rich resources made it the most valuable territory claimed by the British Empire, hence the "jewel" of the Empire. India inherited the title "Jewel in the crown" sometime after the original "jewel," the American colonies, won their independence. OpenStudy (osprey):

Queen Victoria needed a quick title to stay ahead of one of her daughters who had become an EMPRESS by marrying an emperor. It seems she grabbed India and called herself, by parliament, Empress of India. I think this bizarre tale is true, I don't know if it answers the question though.
